Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) 

Do you need to be qualified to Teach?


Yes!  The new minimum requirement for people who wish to teach in post 16 education and training, is PTLLS or equivalent.

September 2007 marked the start of wide reaching changes for all staff in the lifelong learning sector whose role includes teaching, training or tutoring.  This means those people who teach or train in the workplace or in the community, colleges, training centres or offender learning are required to gain an appropriate qualification.  This 'Award in Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector' qualification (PTLLS) satisfies the government requirment for all trainers, teachers and tutors to hold an initial teaching award.  Achievement of PTLLS confers threshold status to teach.

Who should achieve the PTLLS award? 
The PTLLS award is designed for those who: 

  •  are new to training, teaching or tutoring in the lifelong learner sector

  •  want to be a trainer or teacher in the lifelong learning sector

  • want to update their underpinning knowledge and teaching or training skills
